Stop & Shop and 3 Guys Trip

I went to Stop & Shop in Coney Island for the first time today. It was the cleanest, brightest, largest, easiest-to-find-parking, grocery store I've been to in Brooklyn. As you can see from the picture above, I had quite a haul. I purchased:

  • 10 packages of Kraft 2% singles
  • 8 Totinos Pizzas
  • 9 Birds Eye Steam Fresh Vegetables
  • 2 Loaves Whole Wheat bread (store brand)
  • 1 Box Gorton's Crispy Fish Fillets
  • 4 Boxes Fiber Plus Granola Bars
  • 2 packages Yoplait Trix Yogurt
  • 2 twin packs Smart Balance Light Butter
  • 2 bottles Tabasco Green Chili Sauce
  • 2 16oz containers of Breakstone's Sour Cream
  • 4 64oz cartons Minute Maid Orange Juice
  • 4 1/2 gallons Tuscan milk
  • 1 64oz carton Hood Simply Smart Fat Free Chocolate milk
  • 2 bags Cape Cod 40% reduced fat potato chips
Total before store savings and coupons: $149.73
Total after coupons and store savings: $52.36
Side note: I wasn't paying attention when I was grabbing the Steamfresh veggies. I thought they were all $1 ea, but I grabbed a few of the larger packages that were $2.50. I had a nice cashier and a patient customer behind me, so I let it go. Had I been paying more attention, my total bill would have been about $10 cheaper.

No, my family isn't going to live on Totinos for a week. We purchased 6 whole chickens a few weeks ago at Pathmark when they were .69¢/lb and pork chops at the same time. The key to getting a TON of food for a little bit of money is to stock up on the items you really use when they're on super-sale.

In addition to the Stop & Shop items, we also went to Three Guys for produce. I purchased:
  • 2 yellow onions
  • 3 green bell peppers
  • 3+ lbs of red seedless grapes
  • 3 golden delicious apples
  • 1 large head of garlic
  • 1 bunch? of celery
  • 1 pint strawberries
  • 1/2 a seedless watermelon
  • 7 half sour pickles
  • 3 nectarines
Total: $17.58

Total for the week: $69.94
We have a weekly budget of $100 (including diapers and toiletries). I haven't hit the pharmacy yet, but even with the 45 deodorants/bodywashes I plan to purchase, I will still come in under budget for the week.

  1. Does your stop and shop have scan it???
Ours in Maspeth does and is a couponers dream to have that thing!!!

You bring your own bags (you get .05 back each)
you scan your groceries and pack them as you shop you get to the self checkout lane scan the "scan it" card at the front and when you scan your S&S card it loads up on the register automatically. You then load subtract the bags you brought (one can do one bag per item lol) scan your coupons and you are done!!!!!

no cashier to annoy, if someone is behind you and you're having coupon problem who cares. If you are having a coupon problem you call on the attendant and they come with their little machine and scan them no problem. It's truly heavenly!.
I never shop without it anymore or even shop at a cashier register.

I can take as much time as I need to make sure I have all my coupons all my items and you get extra savings for using the little "gun" you also can just scan something to price check it and not have to walk to price scanner.

    phew!
Btw I just found your site and I'm in love!!! I just shared it with my group on NYC mommas!

  2. Mayerlin- This was my first trip EVER to Stop & Shop. I was just trying to get the lay of the land, so to speak. I love the idea of doing it all myself and will definitely look for the "scan it" feature next time I go. I knew about the 5¢/bag deal, and wouldn't you know, I left all my bags at home!

This site is less than 3 months old, so I'm trying to get more people to check it out. I'd love it if you'd tell a friend (or 20) about the site. :)

  4. Well go online register your card and see if your local S&S has scan it. They track your yearly savings. Last year I saved 1800 at S&S only!! Also if you say walk to the car and remember you forgot to use a coupon you walk back into customer service show them your receipt and they will give you the money you should have saved INCLUDING doubles. Sign up to get their cirgular in the mail and sign up another family member. Every 2 to 3 months they have dollar doubler week and you get 4 coupons in the MAIL circular (or the ones in the ad bags) they never have them in stores.

I always left them at first. But I fold all plastic bags from the grocery store and leave them in our glove compartment and a wrist wallet in my handbag. You can bring any bag so i fold them pretty tiny and I can fit like 15! in one of those NY&CO wrist wallets lol. I also have a a few in my coupon binder. It's fun!!

I hope your blog takes off into success from today on I'm a faithful reader =)
